163 per cent increase in food bank use in past year
When I saw this statistic all I could do is shake my head.
We have all heard the term FOOD BANK but do you know anyone who uses one? You might do, but no one is going to jump up and down and say “ I use a food bank”.
You would be surprised with the range of different types of people who have this need.
Can it be right, that in the 21st Century, so many people are still relying on hand outs and the good will of others to be able to eat?
Great Britain, is amongst the top 10 richest counties in the world, the city of London alone with the financial services sector, creates billions of pounds of wealth but I’m sure the people who clean the Bankers offices are on the minimum wage.
The gap between the rich and the poor is growing wider and faster than ever before.
The cost of living will always be increasing sometimes slowly and at other times very quickly but the key is in the words, COST of living.
When I was at school there used to be an annual event called the Harvest festival, we (the kids) were encouraged to go through our kitchen cupboards and donate any food items that our household could spare. Once all the donations had been collected, they were then taken to the local churches and then given to the needy and poor. I don’t know if schools still do this, I’m sure someone will tell me.
The point is although the vast majority of us can afford to feed ourselves and our families, there is a large section of the population who are really struggling.
With Christmas coming fast there is set to be 500,000 people using food banks this year.
Child poverty is as rampant as ever, welfare reforms and benefit cuts, a so called economic recovery lead by poorly paid service jobs, this is a recipy for more pain and more food bank users.
There will be more information posted in relation to food poverty and food banks.
